WILD first went on the air in 1946 as all classical music station WBMS. Eventually, they went to a "popular music" format, briefly adopted the call letters WHEE, then went back to being WBMS. By the end of the 50s, the call letters were changed to WILD under owner Bartell Broadcasters, who tried a personality DJ and music format. In 1966, Leonard Walk purchased the station and WILD went on to be the only Black-hosted R&B radio station in the city for over 40 years. With DJs like Jimmy "Early" Byrd, Chuck Corr (I wanna be close to you baby like white on rice, like cool on ice),  Brother Love, James "The Loveman" Lewis III, Skippy White, Rick Anderson, Coach Willie Maye and more, its voice was unique and its audience fiercely loyal.
